Overview

Balıkesir is a large province in Turkey's Southern Marmara region, straddling the coastlines of both the Sea of Marmara to the north and the Aegean Sea to the southwest. Its capital city of the same name sits inland on a fertile plateau at the junction of major roads between Istanbul and Izmir, a position that has kept it commercially important since Roman times. The province's 2020 population exceeded 660,000 in the city alone, making it one of western Anatolia's significant urban centres.

The landscape ranges from the olive groves and beach resorts of the Aevalık and Edremit coast to the thermal spa towns of the interior, the birdwatching wetlands around Manyas and Kuş Cenneti, and the pine-forested mountains around Dursunbey and Sındırgı. Historically, the area was the heart of the Karasid emirate (1297–1360), one of the first Anatolian Turkish beyliks, before being absorbed by the nascent Ottoman Empire.

For travellers, Balıkesir's appeal is its diversity: Aegean beach towns like Ayvalık and Edremit, historic mosques and Ottoman architecture in the capital, thermal springs in Gönen and Sındırgı, and the bird paradise of Lake Manyas — all within a single province that remains well off the main tourist circuit.

When to Visit

April through June and September through October are ideal, with warm but not scorching temperatures (18–28 °C) and fewer crowds on the Aegean coast. July and August are peak season in Ayvalık and Edremit, when the beaches fill with domestic tourists and prices rise. Winters are mild on the coast but cold inland; thermal spa towns like Gönen and Sındırgı are year-round destinations. The Kuvay-i Milliye commemoration events in Balıkesir city honour the province's role in the Turkish War of Independence. Birdwatchers should visit Kuş Cenneti in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) during migration seasons.

Getting Around

Balıkesir is well connected by road and rail. The O5 motorway links the city to Bursa (2.5 hr) and Izmir (3 hr). Frequent intercity buses serve the Istanbul–Izmir corridor, with departures every 30 minutes. The railway station is a junction: the İzmir Mavi Treni (Blue Train) runs nightly between Ankara and Izmir via Balıkesir, and the 6 Eylül / 17 Eylül Ekspresi connects Izmir with Bandırma on the Marmara coast. Within the province, minibuses (dolmuş) radiate from the old bus terminal (Eski Garaj) near the railway station to district towns. Distances are manageable: Bandırma is 1.5 hr north, Edremit 1.5 hr west, Ayvalık 2 hr southwest, and Gönen 1 hr northwest. Car hire is useful for exploring the coast and interior at your own pace.

Cuisine

Balıkesir's cuisine reflects both its Marmara and Aegean identities. The province is a major olive-oil producer, and dishes from the Ayvalık–Edremit coast lean heavily on olive oil, fresh vegetables, and seafood. Inland, heartier fare dominates: keskek (a ceremonial meat-and-barley stew), tirit (bread soaked in broth with meat and offal), and mantı (Turkish ravioli with yoghurt). The province's dairy industry supplies excellent cheeses and butter. Desserts include höşmerim — a cream-cheese halva topped with ice cream, honey, or nuts — and zerde, a saffron rice pudding made with water rather than milk. Susurluk, on the highway between Bursa and Balıkesir, is nationally famous for its foamy ayran. In the capital, the restaurant strip east of the railway station along Milli Kuvvetler Caddesi and Vasıf Çınar Caddesi has dozens of affordable lokanta-style eateries.
