Yumurtalik

Yumurtalık is a coastal district in Adana Province, situated on the Mediterranean coast about 60 km east of Adana city centre. Formerly known as Ayas, it was an important medieval port used by Armenian, Genoese, and Venetian merchants. Today it is a quiet seaside town known for its beaches, seafood restaurants, and the nearby Yumurtalık Nature Reserve, a coastal wetland important for birdlife.

The climate is Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters, making it a pleasant year-round destination.

Çukurova Airport (COV IATA) is about 65 km west. Take a taxi or shuttle to Adana first, then connect to Yumurtalık.

Yumurtalık is about 50 minutes east of Adana via the D-400 and coastal roads. Regular minibuses run from Adana's otogar.

The town is small and walkable. The beach areas and nature reserve are best explored by car.

• Yumurtalık Nature Reserve — A protected coastal wetland and lagoon area that hosts migratory birds, flamingos, and other waterfowl. Excellent for birdwatching.

• Yumurtalık Castle — Ruins of a medieval castle that once guarded the port.

• Beaches — Sandy beaches along the Mediterranean coast.

• Historic Ayas Port — Remains of the ancient harbour and Genoese/Venetian trading posts.

• Birdwatching — The nature reserve is a prime spot for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons.

Yumurtalık is known for its seafood — grilled fish, shrimp, and calamari are served at restaurants along the harbour. Traditional meze is also excellent.

Tea and ayran accompany meals at seaside restaurants. Fresh juices are available in summer.

• Budget — Small guesthouses (pansiyons) near the beach.
• Mid-range — Modest hotels serve summer visitors and weekenders from Adana.

Fresh seafood and locally produced olive oil make good purchases.

• Adana (50 min) — City attractions including the Archaeology Museum, Sabancı Mosque, and famous kebab.
• Karatas (35 km west) — Another coastal town with beaches and the Magarus ruins.
• Ceyhan (25 min north) — Energy hub city.
• Osmaniye (45 min east) — Neighbouring province with historical sites.
