About Fyzabad

Fyzabad is a town in southwestern Trinidad, located in the Siparia region approximately 10 km north of Siparia borough and 15 km south of San Fernando. The town has a population of around 15,000 and is one of Trinidad's historically significant communities, having grown up around the oil industry that transformed southern Trinidad in the early 20th century. The name Fyzabad derives from Faizabad, a city in India, reflecting the strong Indo-Trinidadian heritage of the area.

Fyzabad's character is shaped by its working-class roots in the petroleum sector and its deep cultural traditions. The town was a centre of labour organising in the 1930s, when oilfield workers — led by the legendary Tubal Uriah "Buzz" Butler — staged strikes that changed the course of Trinidad's political history. Today, Fyzabad retains a lively, community-oriented atmosphere with a busy market, numerous roti shops, and active Hindu and Muslim religious institutions. The town sits on relatively flat terrain surrounded by agricultural land and oil infrastructure. Climate is tropical with a dry season from January to May and a rainy season from June to December; temperatures range from 25–32°C.

Food & Dining

Fyzabad's food culture is firmly Indo-Trinidadian. Doubles are the star attraction — vendors set up from 6–7 AM and sell out by mid-morning. The town's roti shops serve dhalpuri roti, buss-up-shut (paratha roti), and curry fillings including chicken, goat, duck, shrimp, and channa. Look for small restaurants and street stalls serving curry duck, a southern Trinidad specialty, often cooked with coconut milk and hot peppers. Bake and shark (fried bread with seasoned shark meat and condiments) is available at some stalls. Meals are affordable — TT$20–50 for a filling plate. Vegetarian options are widely available.

Cafes & Nightlife

Rum shops are the social centres, serving Angostura rum and local beers (Carib, Stag). Non-alcoholic options include coconut water, homemade ginger beer, and sorrel. The drinking culture is social and casual — rum shops double as domino halls and community gathering spots. There is no nightlife scene.
