Santa Cruz
San Juan-Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago
Why visit Santa Cruz?
Santa Cruz is a valley community in the San Juan-Laventille region of Trinidad, nestled in the foothills of the Northern Range northeast of Port of Spain. The community takes its name from the Spanish colonial period — "Holy Cross" — and is known for its natural beauty, cooler climate compared to the coastal lowlands, and its position as a gateway to the Northern Range's forested interior. Santa Cruz has a population of several thousand and retains a semi-rural character that contrasts with the more urbanised communities to the south.
The valley setting gives Santa Cruz a distinctive atmosphere — the surrounding hills are lush with tropical vegetation, and the community is spread along the winding valley road with houses climbing the lower slopes. The area has historically been a mix of agricultural land (cocoa, citrus, and vegetable cultivation) and residential development, though in recent decades the residential character has come to dominate. Santa Cruz is predominantly Indo-Trinidadian, with Hindu temples and cultural traditions reflecting the community's heritage. The climate is tropical but slightly cooler than the lowlands due to elevation, with temperatures ranging from 23–30°C.
