Tu'anuku
Vava'u, Tonga
Why visit Tu'anuku?
Tu'anuku is a small coastal village on the north-western side of 'Utu Vava'u, the main island of the Vava'u group, about 20 km north-west of Neiafu. With a population of around 300, Tu'anuku is one of the more remote villages on the main island, set along a sheltered cove with views across the water to the islands of the western Vava'u group. The village is surrounded by coconut plantations and hillsides planted with vanilla and kava. Life here follows the Tongan village rhythm: subsistence farming, fishing, church attendance, and family obligations.
Tu'anuku sees very few visitors, which is part of its appeal. The road from Neiafu passes through some of the most scenic countryside on 'Utu Vava'u, and the village itself sits at the end of the western loop road, giving it a sense of remoteness that is rare even by Vava'u standards. The dry season (May–October) is the best time to visit, when the roads are in good condition and the views across the channel are at their clearest.

Tu'anuku Church — the village white church, set against the green hillside; the Sunday service is the social focus of the week.
Scenic drive — the approach road to Tu'anuku along the western coast is one of the most scenic drives on 'Utu Vava'u, with panoramic ocean views.
Swimming and beachcombing — the cove at Tu'anuku is peaceful and protected; good for a quiet afternoon swim.
Walking the western hills — the hills above the village offer walking trails with views over the entire western Vava'u seascape.
Photography — the village setting, with its church, palm trees, cove, and ocean views, is highly photogenic.
Village life — simply spending time in Tu'anuku, watching fishing boats come and go and village life unfold, is the experience.
