Hunga
Vava'u, Tonga
About Hunga
Hunga is a small island in the Vava'u group, lying about 10 km south-west of Neiafu in the sheltered waters of the Port of Refuge. It is one of the most visited islands in Vava'u, but not for its beaches or villages — Hunga is the centre of Vava'u's humpback whale tourism. The deep, protected channels between Hunga and the neighbouring islands of Kapa and Mounu are the primary breeding and calving grounds of the humpback whales that migrate to Tonga each year. Between June and November, these waters are where licensed operators take small groups to swim with whales, making Hunga synonymous with one of the world's great wildlife encounters.
The island itself is small and sparsely populated, with a few homes and a church serving a small community of perhaps 100 people. The coastline is a mix of rocky shores and small sandy coves. Most visitors come on day trips from Neiafu or on whale-watching charters that pass through Hunga's waters. The island has no tourist infrastructure of any kind — no restaurants, no shops, no accommodation. The dry season and whale season overlap (June–November), with the peak months of August and September being the busiest for whale-swim operators.

Things to do
Hunga's whale grounds — the waters around Hunga are the primary draw. Even from the shore, during the season (June–November), humpback whales can sometimes be seen breaching and sounding in the channels.
Hunga coastline — the shoreline is a mixture of rocky points and small, secluded sandy coves with clear turquoise water.
Hunga Church — a tiny village church that serves the small local community.
Swim with humpback whales (June–November) — this is the reason to come to Hunga. Licensed whale-swim operators run small-group trips from Neiafu into the waters around Hunga. Expect a full day, roughly TOP 500–700 per person. Strict rules govern encounters: limited swimmers per group, no approaching mothers with calves, no chasing.
Snorkelling — the reef around Hunga has reasonable coral and fish life; water clarity is excellent in the dry season. Bring your own gear.
Whale watching from a boat — if swimming with whales is not your preference, whale-watching-only trips are cheaper (around TOP 250–400 per person) and equally rewarding.
Photography — the combination of whales, turquoise water, and the green island backdrop creates extraordinary photographic opportunities.
