Ta'anea

Vava'u, Tonga

Why visit Ta'anea?

Ta'anea is a small village on the north-eastern side of 'Utu Vava'u, the main island of the Vava'u group, about 12 km north-east of Neiafu. With a population of around 250, Ta'anea sits on a hill overlooking the sheltered waters of the Neiafu harbour channel, with views across to the islands of the eastern Vava'u group. The village is primarily agricultural, with vanilla, kava, and coconut plantations covering the surrounding hillsides. Fishing also plays a role in the local economy.

Ta'anea is a quiet, unassuming Tongan village that offers a glimpse of rural life in Vava'u. It lies on the northern loop road and is easily reached from Neiafu by car or scooter. The dry season (May–October) is the best time to visit, when the roads are in good condition and the harbour views are at their most impressive.
