About Holonga
Holonga is a small coastal village on the north-eastern coast of Tongatapu, about 25 km from Nuku'alofa along the Taufa'ahau Road, the main eastern highway. With a population of around 500, Holonga is set on the edge of the lagoon that fringes much of Tongatapu's north coast, with a calm waterfront looking north toward the smaller islands of the Vava'u group on clear days. The village is perhaps best known in the guidebooks for the Captain Cook Landing Site, a modest historical marker on the coast just beyond the village, where Captain James Cook is said to have come ashore during his third Pacific voyage. The village also hosted the famous tortoise Tu'i Malila, which was kept in the royal family's estate here after being presented to the King and lived to the age of 189 before dying in 1966.
The landscape around Holonga is typical of eastern Tongatapu: a patchwork of small farms, coconut plantations, and fishing settlements, with the reef-protected lagoon providing calm water for outrigger canoes and small fishing boats. The dry season (May–October) is the best time to visit. The village is on the bus route from Nuku'alofa, making it more accessible than many rural Tongatapu settlements.
