About Pattaya
Pattaya (พัทยา) is a seaside resort on the Eastern Gulf Coast of Thailand, about 150 km southeast of Bangkok. Originally a small fishing village called Thap Phraya, it became a famous R&R destination for American GIs during the Vietnam War and has since grown into one of the world's most visited tourism hotspots. Pattaya is best known for its go-go bars and vibrant nightlife, but local authorities have made efforts to provide more family-friendly attractions. With over five million annual visitors, the city offers an excellent range of dining options, shopping, water sports, and cultural sites.
The city is divided into several sub-districts: North Pattaya (Pattaya Nua), Central Pattaya (Pattaya Klang), and South Pattaya (Pattaya Tai) along the beachfront, plus Naklua to the north, Buddha Hill/Pratumnak to the south, and East Pattaya (the "Darkside") inland. The climate is tropical with hot temperatures year-round; the coolest months are December–February, while the rainy season runs May–October. Pattaya Beach is lively and crowded, while Jomtien Beach (covered separately) offers a more sedate alternative.
