Bang Yai
Nonthaburi, Thailand
About Bang Yai
Bang Yai is a district in western Nonthaburi Province, situated at the junction of Kanchanaphisek Road (Highway 9) and Rattanathibet Road. It has transformed rapidly from an orchard-farming area into one of Nonthaburi's most commercially important districts, anchored by the massive CentralPlaza Westgate shopping complex and the MRT Purple Line's western terminus. Despite this modern development, parts of Bang Yai still retain fruit orchards, canals, and a semi-rural western fringe.
The district's name means "Big District" in Thai, and its growth has matched that name — it is now a major suburban hub serving both Nonthaburi and western Bangkok. The cool season from November to February is the best time to visit, with temperatures around 30–32°C. The hot season (March–May) can be intense, and the rainy season (June–October) brings regular afternoon downpours.

The MRT Purple Line serves Bang Yai directly, with stations at Talat Bang Yai and Khlong Bang Phai being the most convenient. The line connects to the MRT Blue Line at Tao Poon, providing a fast rail link from central Bangkok. Fares range from 16–42 baht depending on distance.
By Car / Road
Bang Yai sits at the intersection of Rattanathibet Road and Kanchanaphisek Road (Highway 9), making it easily accessible by car from Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Buses and songthaews connect Bang Yai to Nonthaburi city and the MRT stations. From central Bangkok, the drive takes 30–50 minutes depending on traffic.
The MRT Purple Line is the most convenient way to get around Bang Yai for destinations along the Rattanathibet Road corridor. Songthaews and motorbike taxis fill the gaps for trips away from the main road, with short journeys costing 20–50 baht. Grab and other ride-hailing apps operate in the area. The district is not particularly walkable outside the CentralPlaza Westgate area.
Things to do
CentralPlaza Westgate is Thailand's largest shopping mall by floor area when it opened, housing hundreds of shops, restaurants, cinemas, and an indoor ice-skating rink. Wat Bang Yai, a local temple near the old town centre, has a traditional Thai ordination hall. The Bang Yai Canal runs through the district, lined with remnants of orchard land and traditional wooden houses that contrast with the modern mall development.
Shopping at CentralPlaza Westgate is the district's signature activity — it has a major cinema complex, a food court, and regular weekend events and performances. The western part of the district offers cycling routes along canal roads past fruit orchards. During the durian season (April–June), roadside orchard stalls sell fresh Nonthaburi durian directly to visitors.
