About Don Tan
Don Tan (ดอนตาล) is a district in southeastern Mukdahan Province, Thailand, bordering Laos across the Mekong River. Originally a tambon of Mukdahan District in Nakhon Phanom Province, it was upgraded to a minor district in 1963 and became a full district in 1974. When Mukdahan Province was established in 1982, Don Tan was assigned as one of its constituent districts.
The district covers 511 km² and is home to approximately 42,000 people, predominantly Isaan and Phu Thai ethnic groups. Don Tan sits along the Mekong River and is known for its agricultural economy — rice farming, rubber plantations, and fruit orchards. The district includes the Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park, named for its lotus-shaped mountain, which features scenic waterfalls and forest trails.
The climate follows the Isaan pattern: cool season (Nov–Feb), hot season (Mar–May), and rainy season (Jun–Oct). The best time to visit is November to February when temperatures are mild. Don Tan itself is a small market town serving as the district centre, with the Mekong riverfront as its main draw.
