Chanthaburi, about 245 km southeast of Bangkok on the Eastern Gulf Coast, is one of Thailand's most quietly rewarding provinces — known to Thais for two things above all: gems and durian. Its forested interior hills hide some of the country's most productive ruby and sapphire deposits, and Chanthaburi town remains one of the world's significant gemstone trading centres, its weekend Gem Street a working market where dealers sort stones on folding tables. The same hills, watered by reliable rains, make the province a heartland of tropical fruit orchards, with durian, rambutan, mangosteen, and longan grown in abundance.
The province also carries unusual historical weight. Chanthaburi was where King Taksin the Great regrouped his forces in 1767 to recapture the kingdom after the fall of Ayutthaya, and it spent eleven years under French occupation around the turn of the 20th century — a legacy still visible in its substantial Vietnamese-descended Catholic community and the neo-Gothic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the largest church in Thailand.
For travellers, Chanthaburi offers an atmospheric riverside Old Town, peaceful beaches in the Tha Mai district, waterfalls and national parks in the highlands, and a useful position as a transport hub for Ko Chang, Ko Kut, and the Cambodian border crossings. It is a province best appreciated slowly.
When to Visit
The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies ideal for the Old Town, beaches, and waterfall trekking. March to May is hot, and the southwest monsoon (roughly May to October) makes Chanthaburi one of Thailand's wettest provinces — the surrounding hills catch heavy rain, which is precisely why the fruit orchards thrive.
The standout reason to visit despite the wet weather is fruit season. From April to June the province hosts the Chanthaburi World Durian Festival, a major event celebrating durian, rambutan, and mangosteen with parades, contests, and orchard tours. Gem buyers should aim for a Friday-to-Sunday visit, when the Gem Street trade is most active.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Chanthaburi town is roughly 4 hours by bus from Bangkok's Ekamai (Eastern) terminal and Mo Chit, with multiple daily departures by both the government Transport Co. and private operators (Cherdchai, Pornnipa, Suparat Tour). Minivans run from Victory Monument in Bangkok, taking 2.5–3.5 hours and costing around 200 baht (~US$6) each way, dropping passengers near the edge of town.
Within the province there is no passenger rail. The compact Old Town and riverside area are walkable. For destinations further out, songthaews (shared pickups) operate from around the bus station, but the most flexible option is to rent a motorbike near the bus terminal. The Tha Mai beaches (Hat Chao Lao, Hat Khung Wiman, Hat Laem Sadet) lie about 30 km from town via Highway 3 and Highway 3399. For Cambodia, the nearest crossing is Ban Pakard, 1–2 hours away by minibus (~100 baht) or songthaew (~40 baht), facing Phsar Prum and the road to Pailin. Trat, the gateway to Ko Chang, is a short bus ride further east.

WhatsAppCuisine
Chanthaburi has a distinctive culinary identity, blending Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese influences. Its single most famous product is Sen Chan (Chanthaburi rice noodles) — the thin, springy noodle used nationwide for pad Thai, and Chanthaburi-made versions are prized. Try pad Thai using fresh Sen Chan noodles, and kuaitiao Chanthaburi-style noodle dishes at Old Town eateries.
Vietnamese heritage shows in dishes such as mu chamuang — a tangy pork stew cooked with the sour leaves of the local chamuang tree, considered the province's signature dish — and in Vietnamese-style spring rolls and pancakes found around town. As an orchard province, Chanthaburi is also synonymous with durian (the Mon Thong and other varieties), rambutan, and mangosteen; roadside stalls and orchard visits make fruit a core part of any trip. The Old Town waterfront has a growing cluster of cafes and restaurants, and the area between the two road bridges hosts bars and riverside dining. Vegetarian options are easier than in many rural provinces thanks to the Chinese and Buddhist influence.
Culture & Festivals
Chanthaburi's culture is unusually layered: a Thai-Buddhist majority alongside a long-established Vietnamese Catholic community and the indigenous Chong people, Mon-Khmer hunter-gatherer descendants who now live mostly around Ban Khlong Phlu in Khao Khitchakut.
The province's biggest celebration is the World Durian Festival (around April–June), timed to the fruit harvest. King Taksin commemorations are significant given Chanthaburi's role in his campaign — the Taksin Maharat Memorial and shrine are focal points. The Khao Khitchakut pilgrimage, when the Buddha's footprint shrine atop the mountain opens to worshippers, draws large crowds during the cool season (roughly January to March). Catholic traditions, including Christmas celebrations at the Cathedral, are a distinctive feature. The province is also a centre for gem cutting and reed mat weaving (sou — Chanthaburi mats), and traditional crafts are sold throughout the Old Town.
