Kaeng Khro

Kaeng Khro is a district in eastern Chaiyaphum Province in Thailand's Isaan region. The district covers 582 km² and lies on the edge of the Khorat Plateau, with a population of around 88,000. It is primarily an agricultural area, with rice farming, cassava, and sugar cane as the main economic activities.

The district's name translates roughly to "Kaeng" (rapids) and "Khro" (a type of tree), referring to the natural features along the local waterways. The area has a notable reservoir, Khuean Bon (Lam Patao Reservoir), which provides irrigation for the surrounding farmland and is a local recreation spot.

The climate follows the Isaan pattern: a cool season (November–February), a hot season (March–May, when temperatures can exceed 38°C), and a rainy season (June–October). Kaeng Khro is about 50 km east of Chaiyaphum town, accessible via Highway 202.

By Plane

Khon Kaen Airport (KKC) is the nearest major airport, about 100 km north-east. Nakhon Ratchasima Airport (NAK) is about 150 km south. Both have domestic flights from Bangkok.

By Train

Bua Yai Station (about 40 km east) on the Bangkok–Nong Khai line is the nearest rail access. Local buses connect the station to Kaeng Khro.

By Car / Road

Take Highway 202 east from Chaiyaphum town for about 50 km. From Khon Kaen, take Highway 2 south to Ban Phai, then Highway 202 south-west. Regular buses run from Chaiyaphum bus terminal.

Songthaews serve the sub-districts from the town centre. Within the district town, walking and motorcycle taxis are sufficient.

• Khuean Bon Reservoir (Lam Patao) — A scenic reservoir popular for picnics, fishing, and sunset views. Located just outside the town.

• Local temples — Several Buddhist monasteries with traditional Isaan-style architecture.

• Fishing at Khuean Bon — The reservoir is stocked with freshwater fish and is a popular weekend spot for locals.

• Cycle the rural roads — Flat farmland terrain makes for easy cycling through rice paddies and cassava fields.

• Kaeng Khro morning market — Stalls selling khao tom (rice soup), grilled meats, fresh fruit, and sticky rice.
• Restaurants near the reservoir — Several casual places serving grilled fish and Isaan staples.

Simple tea and coffee shops in the town centre. Bottled water is recommended.

• Budget: Basic guesthouses in the town centre, from 350 baht.
• Mid-range: Small hotels along Highway 202, from 500–800 baht.

Local agricultural produce at the morning market. Traditional Isaan woven textiles may be available from village artisans.

• Phu Khiao — 35 km north, a larger district with markets and the Phu Khiao Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Chaiyaphum — 50 km west, the provincial capital with the Chaopho Phraya Lae Monument.
• Khon Kaen — 100 km north-east, a major Isaan city with shopping, museums, and nightlife.
• Tat Ton National Park — 70 km west, with waterfalls and hiking trails.
