About Phana
Phana is a small district (amphoe) in the eastern part of Amnat Charoen Province, about 30 km south-east of the provincial capital. It covers 235 km² of flat to gently rolling farmland and is home to about 28,000 people (2010). The district was originally part of the historic Mueang Phana Nikhom, a subordinate of Ubon Ratchathani, and was established as a modern district in its current form on 22 July 1959. In 1993 it became part of the newly created Amnat Charoen Province.
Phana is a quiet agricultural district best known for two remarkable sights: Wat Phra Lao Thep Nimit, a Lanna-style temple housing one of the most beautiful Buddha images in northeast Thailand, and Don Chao Pu Botanical Park, a forest park with a sacred shrine and abundant crab-eating macaques. The district sees very few foreign tourists and offers an unfiltered slice of rural Isaan life.
The best time to visit is the cool, dry season from November to February. The hot season (March-May) can exceed 38°C, and the rainy season (June-October) brings daily downpours.

By Train
By Car / Road
From Amnat Charoen town, take Hwy 202 east toward Ubon Ratchathani, then turn onto Route 2142 south — about 30 km, 30-40 min. From Ubon Ratchathani, take Hwy 212 north about 20 km, then Route 2045 east — about 60 km total. Buses from Amnat Charoen town pass through Phana regularly; look for yellow songthaews (converted pickups) from the main bus station.
Phana town centre is small and walkable. For reaching Wat Phra Lao Thep Nimit (about 3 km from the centre) and Don Chao Pu park (about 5 km), you will need a motorcycle taxi or your own transport. Songthaews operate between the sub-districts but are infrequent.
Things to do
Wat Phra Lao Thep Nimit (วัดพระเหลาเทพนิมิตร) — The district's star attraction. This temple features a Lanna-style chapel housing the principal Buddha image, Phra Lao Thep Nimit, cast in 1720 in the subduing-Mara posture and decorated with gold leaf. Considered the most beautiful Buddha image in northeast Thailand, its style reflects Laotian art from Vientiane influenced by Lanna (16th-17th centuries). Free entry. Located in tambon Phra Lao, about 3 km from the town centre.
Don Chao Pu Botanical Park (วนอุทยานดอนเจ้าปู่) — A forest park with a sacred shrine and several Buddha images depicting the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, first sermon, and reclining pose. The park is home to numerous crab-eating macaques, easily spotted around the grounds. Free entry. Early morning or late afternoon is best for wildlife.
Phana Town Market — A small local market selling fresh produce, grilled meats, and everyday goods.
Visit the temples: Phana is a religious hub — aside from Wat Phra Lao, there are several smaller wats in the district worth a short stop.
Monkey-watch at Don Chao Pu: the crab-eating macaques are the main draw; bring no loose plastic bags (monkeys will grab them) and avoid feeding them.
Cycle through the surrounding farmland: the district's quiet country roads are ideal for a relaxed bicycle ride through rice paddies and palm groves.
Photograph the Lanna chapel: the beautifully proportioned wooden and stucco chapel at Wat Phra Lao is a fine subject, especially in the golden hour.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Food in Phana is classic Isaan street and market fare. The morning market (06:00-09:00) offers grilled chicken (gai yang), sticky rice, som tam, larb, and freshly made nam tok. There are a few simple rice-and-curry shops in the town centre and noodle stalls in the afternoon. The temple fair days (usually on Buddhist holy days) bring extra food vendors to Wat Phra Lao's grounds.
- Morning market (tambon Phana) — Best selection of grilled meats and Isaan-style salads.
- Noodle stalls near the district office — Open for lunch; serve boat noodles and clear soup with pork.
Cafes & Nightlife
Chilled bottled drinks, soda, and beer (Singha, Chang) are available at the market and at small grocery shops. There are no bars or cafés. Bottled water is safe; tap water is not.

Ask on WhatsAppPlaces to Stay
Phana has no tourist hotels or guesthouses. The closest reliable accommodation is in Amnat Charoen town (30 km, 30 min), where Faikid Hotel (+66 45 511 222) and several small guesthouses offer rooms from 300-1,200 baht. A few very basic local inns (no English, no online booking) exist along the main road for Thai government travellers; ask at the district office. Some temples may accept meditators on a donation basis.
What to buy
Phana has no dedicated shopping. The small market sells basic groceries, snacks, and household items. Local silk and cotton fabric is woven in some villages but is not sold in any central shop — you would need to ask around at local temples or homes. For handicrafts and souvenirs, Amnat Charoen town or Ubon Ratchathani are better options.
