Overview

Tanga is a region in north-eastern Tanzania, bordering Kenya to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east. It is one of Tanzania's most diverse regions, combining the historic Swahili port city of Tanga, the Usambara Mountain highlands, beautiful Indian Ocean beaches, and important wildlife areas.

The region is famous for the Usambara Mountains — a lush, cool highland area with excellent hiking, German colonial hill stations, and traditional villages. The coast offers the historic port towns of Tanga and Pangani, with German colonial architecture, dhow harbours, and quiet beaches. The region also contains Saadani National Park (Tanzania's only coastal wildlife park), the Amboni Caves, and the Amani Nature Reserve.

Tanga is less visited than the northern safari circuit but is a rewarding destination for travellers interested in history, hiking, and coastal culture. The climate varies: hot and humid on the coast, cooler in the Usambara highlands.

When to Visit

The dry season (June–October) is best for hiking in the Usambaras and beach time on the coast. The long rains (March–May) can make trails muddy and roads difficult. The short rains (November–December) are less disruptive.

Cuisine

Tanga's coastal location means fresh seafood features prominently: grilled fish, octopus, prawns, and crab. Coconut milk features in many Swahili dishes. In the Usambara highlands, fresh vegetables, bananas, and mountain-grown coffee are specialties. The region is known for its spices, particularly cardamom and cinnamon from the Amani area.

Culture & Festivals

Tanga's culture is a rich mix of Swahili coastal traditions, the Sambaa and Zigua peoples of the highlands, and influences from German colonial history. The Tanga Carnival (August) features parades, music, and dance. The Usambara highlands are known for traditional woodcarving and weaving. Pangani has a strong dhow-building tradition.
