Overview

Tabora is a historic region in western Tanzania, known as a major centre of the Arab slave and ivory trade in the 19th century. The regional capital, Tabora city, was a key stop on the caravan route between the coast and the Great Lakes region. The region is characterized by flat, miombo-wooded plains and is a major agricultural area for tobacco, maize, and groundnuts.

Tabora has a rich history connected to the Arab trader Tippu Tip and the European explorers Stanley and Livingstone. The region's old town still has remnants of Arab architecture, including the Kwihara ruins and the old slave market. Today, Tabora is an important railway junction on the central line connecting Dar es Salaam to Kigoma and Mwanza.

For travellers, Tabora offers historical sites from the caravan era, a relaxed city atmosphere, and access to the western railway network.

When to Visit

The dry season (June–October) is the best time. The wet season (November–May) brings heavy rains that can affect road travel. Tabora can be very hot from October to November before the rains arrive.
