Overview

Singida is a region in central Tanzania, characterised by flat, semi-arid plains dotted with granite inselbergs and seasonal lakes. The regional capital is Singida town, located on the shores of Lake Singida, a saline lake that attracts flamingos and pelicans. The region sits between Dodoma to the south and Mwanza/Shinyanga to the north.

The landscape is open, with vast acacia savannah and miombo woodland. The main economic activities are agriculture (sunflowers, groundnuts, millet, sorghum) and livestock keeping. The region is home to the Turu (Rimi) and Sandawe peoples. The Sandawe are particularly notable for their Khoe-San language, related to the Khoisan languages of southern Africa.

Singida is off the main safari circuit but rewards travellers interested in authentic rural Tanzania, birdwatching at its seasonal lakes, and cultural encounters with the Sandawe people.

When to Visit

The dry season (June–October) is best for travel and birdwatching. The wet season (November–May) brings green landscapes but can make unpaved roads difficult. Lake Singida and other seasonal lakes attract flamingos mainly in the dry season.
