Overview

Simiyu is a region in north-western Tanzania, created in 2012 from parts of Mwanza and Shinyanga regions. It is named after the Simiyu River and is one of Tanzania's newest regions. The regional capital is Bariadi. The region is predominantly occupied by the Sukuma people, Tanzania's largest ethnic group.

The landscape is flat savannah with some rocky inselbergs and seasonal rivers. Agriculture is the mainstay, with cotton, maize, and groundnuts as the primary crops. Lake Victoria lies to the north-west, and the Serengeti ecosystem borders the region to the north. However, Simiyu itself has no major national parks or tourist attractions.

For travellers, Simiyu is primarily a transit region on the route between Mwanza and the Serengeti or Kenya. Its cultural interest lies in traditional Sukuma village life.

When to Visit

The dry season (June–October) is the best time for travel. Roads become difficult in the wet season (November–May).
