Micheweni

Pemba North, Tanzania

Why visit Micheweni?

Micheweni is the northernmost settlement on Pemba Island, a remote fishing village with a dramatic coastline of rocky headlands and sandy coves. It is the departure point for diving in the Njao Gap, a channel between Pemba and the smaller island of Fundo, known for strong currents and large pelagic fish. The village has a historic lighthouse built by the British.

  • Micheweni Beach — wild, undeveloped, and stunning at high tide.

  • Fundo Island — the small island off the north coast, visible from the headland, with white sand beaches and a small fishing community.

  • Diving the Njao Gap — advanced drift diving with strong currents; sightings of grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and large trevally are common.
