Konde

Konde is a small fishing village on the north coast of Pemba Island, about 15 km north of Wete. It is a centre for scuba diving on Pemba's north-eastern reef, with the famous wreck of the MV Swahili (a cargo ship that sank in the 1990s) lying just off shore. The coast here is protected by a fringing reef that creates calm lagoons at low tide.

Konde is on a paved road from Wete (15 km north, 20 minutes by taxi or dala-dala).

Walkable. For diving, the operator will meet you at the village.

• Konde Beach — a beautiful stretch of white sand (tidal, best at high tide).

• MV Swahili Wreck — the visible wreck of a ship that ran aground and sank on the reef; snorkelling around it is popular.

• Mangrove boardwalk — a small community trail through the mangroves at the edge of the village.

• Diving — the north-east reef has excellent drift dives and coral gardens (TZR 150,000–300,000 per dive).

• Snorkelling at the wreck — the MV Swahili is swimmable and hosts abundant reef fish.

• Dhow trip to Misali Island — Konde is a departure point for day trips.

Small restaurants serve grilled fish, octopus, chapatis, and chai.
