Butiama is a small village about 10 km south of Musoma, famous as the birthplace and burial site of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the founding father and first President of Tanzania. The Nyerere Memorial Museum and the nearby Mwalimu Nyerere Museum Centre attract Tanzanian and international visitors paying homage to the respected statesman.

How do you get there?

Butiama is 10 km south of Musoma on a tarmac road (15 minutes by bus or taxi).

Walkable. The museum and burial site are in the village centre.
