Mara Region lies in the northwestern corner of Tanzania on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, bordering Kenya. It is most famous as the gateway to the Serengeti National Park's northern reaches (the Mara River crossing of the Great Migration) and the Serengeti's main gate at Mugumu. The region also has a rich history as the birthplace of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (in Butiama). The land is a mix of savannah, rocky hills, and Lake Victoria's shore.
When is the best time to visit?
June–October (dry season, best for game viewing in the Serengeti). January–February (wildebeest calving). The long rains (March–May) see fewer tourists.
Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Mara route around them.
WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Musoma is the regional hub. Buses connect Musoma to Mwanza (4 hours), Arusha (7 hours), and Kenya (Migori). For the Serengeti, the main access gate is at Mugumu (north Serengeti) or the main gate at Naabi Hill (from Arusha).
Where should you go?
- Musoma — the regional capital on Lake Victoria, with a lakeside setting, a fish market, and the Musoma Cathedral.
- Tarime — a border town on the main road to Kenya (Migori), known for the Tarime Escarpment.
- Bunda — a market town on the Mwanza–Musoma road, gateway to the Serengeti's Ikoma Gate.
- Mugumu — the Serengeti's northern gateway, near the Mara River and the famous wildebeest river crossings.
- Rorya — a district in northern Mara, bordering the Serengeti and Kenya.
- Butiama — the birthplace of Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's first president, with a museum and memorial.
- Serengeti National Park — Tanzania's most famous park, the Great Migration, Big Five, and vast grasslands.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Lake Victoria provides fresh tilapia and Nile perch. The Luo and Kurya communities along the lake eat ugali with omena (small sardines). Mugumu and the Serengeti lodges serve international safari cuisine.
What is the culture like?
The Kurya, Luo, and Ikoma peoples dominate Mara. The Butiama Festival (October) celebrates Nyerere's legacy. The Serengeti Marathon in Mugumu draws runners.
