About Engaruka
Engaruka is an important archaeological and scenic site on the western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, within the Arusha Region. It is best known for the remains of an extensive pre-colonial irrigation and terrace farming system — the Stone Age ruins of an ancient settlement that channelled water from the Marera River to irrigate fields on the dry valley floor. The site sits at roughly 1,100 m elevation, at the base of the spectacular Rift Valley wall, about halfway between Mto wa Mbu and Lake Natron.

Engaruka is about 40 km northwest of Mto wa Mbu along a rough dirt road (4WD essential in the wet season). From Arusha (120 km), the drive takes roughly 3 hours via Mto wa Mbu. Most visitors visit on an organised day trip from Arusha or Karatu.
The site is walked on foot with a local guide. The terrain is rocky and uneven; sturdy walking shoes are essential.
Things to do
Engaruka Ruins — the core attraction: several square kilometres of ancient stone terracing, canals, cairns, and house platforms dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, when an estimated 30,000 people lived here.
The Rift Valley escarpment — the backdrop of the site is breathtaking, with the sheer 500 m wall of the Rift Valley rising to the west.
Kraal (livestock enclosure) remains — circular stone corrals used by the ancient inhabitants are scattered across the terraced fields.
Guided site walk — a 2–3 hour walk with a local guide (mandatory, arranged at the site entrance) exploring the irrigation channels, terraces, and viewpoints.
Photography — the combination of archaeological ruins, baobab trees, and the Rift Valley backdrop is dramatic.
Bird-watching — the escarpment and surrounding bush are good for eagles, vultures, and the region's vast variety of Rift Valley birds.
