Arusha

The Arusha Region is the undisputed safari capital of Tanzania and the gateway to the country's legendary Northern Safari Circuit. Stretching from the slopes of Mount Meru in the south to the Kenyan border in the north, this compact region packs an extraordinary density of wildlife, volcanic landscapes, and cultural diversity. It is home to the Ngorongoro Crater (one of Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations), the Serengeti's eastern corridor, Lake Manyara, and Mount Kilimanjaro's southern approaches.

Beyond the safari industry, Arusha Region encompasses Maasai pastoralist lands around Monduli and Longido, the fertile coffee-growing slopes of Mount Meru, and the archaeological wonder of Engaruka's ancient irrigation systems. The city of Arusha serves as the regional hub and hosts the East African Community headquarters.

June to October is peak season across the region — dry, cool, and ideal for wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. January and February are also excellent for the calving season in the southern Serengeti/Ngorongoro area. The long rains (March–May) see fewer tourists and lower lodge rates, but some roads in Ngorongoro become muddy. The short rains (November–December) are manageable and the landscape is lush. The annual Arusha Festival (music and arts) takes place in August.

Arusha is the main transport hub. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) lies roughly halfway between Arusha city and Moshi, about 45–60 minutes from Arusha by road. Most visitors join guided safari tours that include 4WD transport. Self-driving is possible on the tarmac A-104 (Arusha–Nairobi highway), but 4WD is recommended for park roads and the gated Ngorongoro descent. Daily buses connect Arusha with Moshi, Mwanza, Dar es Salaam, and Nairobi (Kenya). Local dala-dalas connect Arusha to Monduli, Longido, and Karatu.

• Engaruka — an archaeological site of a pre-colonial irrigation system with stone terraces and abandoned settlements at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.
• Mto wa Mbu — a lively multicultural town at the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its banana beer, curio market, and local food tour scene.
• Karatu — a highland farming town on the rim of the Ngorongoro highlands, a convenient base for visiting the crater and Lake Manyara.
• Oldeani — a village on the western edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offering coffee farm tours, crater-edge hikes, and forest canopy walks.
• Usa River — a small settlement between Arusha and Moshi with flower farms, coffee estates, and the Snake Park reptile sanctuary.
• Arusha National Park — a compact park featuring Mount Meru (4,562 m), Ngurdoto Crater, Momela Lakes, and excellent primate viewing (colobus monkeys).
• Ngorongoro Conservation Area — a UNESCO World Heritage Site centred on the vast Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest unflooded volcanic caldera, with exceptional year-round wildlife.

Arusha is one of the best food cities in Tanzania. Signature dishes include nyama choma (grilled meat, especially goat) and mtori (banana and meat soup, a Chagga/Arusha speciality). The city's Indian community contributes excellent curries, chapati, and samosas. Mto wa Mbu is famous for mbege (banana beer) brewed from fermented cooking bananas and millet — a must-try. Karatu and Oldeani are coffee-growing country; local estates offer tastings. Most mid-range lodges serve international cuisine alongside Swahili dishes.

The Arusha Region is a cultural crossroads of the Maasai, Meru, Arusha, and Chagga peoples. The Maasai are the most visible around Monduli, Longido, and the Ngorongoro highlands — their red-shuka blankets, beadwork, and jumping dances (adumu) are world-famous. The Arusha Festival (August) showcases music, dance, and visual arts from across East Africa. The Kilimanjaro Marathon (February/March) starts in Moshi but draws many visitors based in Arusha. Ngorongoro's Maasai communities hold traditional ceremonies tied to cattle, rites of passage, and the annual Maasai Olympics (a conservation-focused sports event in December).
