About Kubodiyon

Kubodiyon (formerly Kuybyshevsk) is a town in southwestern Khatlon Region, situated on the Kofarnihon River near the border with Afghanistan. It is the administrative centre of Kubodiyon District and an important cotton-growing centre, with extensive irrigated fields covering the surrounding lowlands.

The area has deep historical roots: ancient settlements dating to the Kushan and pre-Islamic periods are scattered across the district, though they have not been as extensively excavated as those at nearby Takhti Sangin. Soviet-era development brought irrigation canals, cotton-processing plants, and the characteristic grid-plan town layout. The climate is hot and dry, with summer highs exceeding 40°C; spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable conditions for travel.

Things to do

  • Kubodiyon archaeological area — several unexcavated or partially excavated tells (settlement mounds) from the Kushan period lie in the fields around Kubodiyon. These are not tourist-ready sites but are of interest to dedicated archaeology enthusiasts.

  • Cotton plains — the vast irrigated fields stretching to the horizon are the defining landscape feature, with the snow-capped Afghan mountains visible to the south on clear days.

  • Kofarnihon River — the river, a tributary of the Panj, flows past the town. Its banks are a popular evening promenade for locals.

  • Cycle the irrigation lanes — the flat, straight roads between cotton fields are excellent for cycling. No dedicated tours exist, but bringing your own bike or renting one from a local opens up the landscape.

  • Visit the bazaar — the central market is lively in the morning, selling fresh produce, bread, and household goods.

  • Fishing on the Kofarnihon — the river holds carp and catfish. Ask locally for good spots.
