Yilan County (宜蘭縣) occupies the northeastern corner of Taiwan, a fertile plain — the Lanyang Plain — that fans out from the mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Shaped like an amphitheatre, it is hemmed by mountains on three sides and open to the sea on the fourth. For most of Taiwan's history this geography kept Yilan relatively isolated from the bustling west coast, and the slower pace and preserved local traditions that resulted are still part of its appeal today.
Yilan was largely settled by Han Chinese immigrants from Zhangzhou, and the local Taiwanese dialect still echoes that origin. It is best known as the birthplace of Taiwanese opera (gezaixi), and its cultural identity remains strong. The county's natural environment — heavy rainfall, fertile plains and easy access to both mountains and sea — supports agriculture, fishing and, above all, hot-spring tourism. The completion of the Xueshan (Hsuehshan) Tunnel transformed Yilan's fortunes, cutting the journey from Taipei to roughly an hour and a half and turning the county into one of northern Taiwan's favourite weekend escapes.
For travellers, Yilan offers a relaxed mix of hot springs, coastline, mountain forest, food and gentle culture. It is close enough to Taipei for a day trip but rewarding enough for a longer stay, with destinations ranging from the spa town of Jiaoxi to the surf and fishing coast around Su'ao and Toucheng, the high cloud-forests of Taipingshan, and the wildlife-rich waters around Turtle Island.
When is the best time to visit?
Yilan is humid and rainy year-round — it is one of the wettest parts of Taiwan — so timing is about minimising rain rather than avoiding it entirely. The most reliable weather comes in autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May), with milder temperatures and somewhat lower rainfall. Winter (December–February) is cool and damp, but that is precisely when the hot springs of Jiaoxi are most enjoyable, making it a popular cold-season getaway.
Summer (June–September) is hot and humid and brings the monsoon and typhoons; heavy rain and storms can disrupt boat trips to Turtle Island and mountain roads to Taipingshan, so build flexibility into summer plans. Whale- and dolphin-watching seasons offshore peak in the warmer months. Yilan's calendar is full of religious festivals, especially around lunar-calendar deity birthdays, so weekend visitors may well stumble upon a temple parade.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Rail, bus and taxi all work well for travelling between Yilan and Taipei, with the Xueshan Tunnel making road journeys fast. Within the county, the Taiwan Railways (TRA) Yilan line is the spine, linking the main towns — Toucheng, Jiaoxi, Yilan City and Luodong — at low cost (a typical hop costs only a few US dollars). Luodong has the county's main bus interchange, and Capital Bus, Kamalan Bus and Guoguang services connect the towns with each other and with Taipei.
For exploring beyond the towns, the most flexible options are scooter, car or bicycle — rentals cluster around the train stations, and a tourist information centre map is a worthwhile first stop. Yilan City is well suited to cycling; a pleasant route runs out to Yuanshan Park and along the riverbank. Taxis are available at stations and bus depots. Note that bus and taxi drivers generally do not speak English, so have destinations written in Chinese.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Yilan's cuisine draws on its fertile plain, abundant seafood and a distinctive set of local specialities. The county is known for scallion (green onion) dishes — the area around Sanxing is famous for its scallions, and scallion pancakes are a regional staple; for mochi and rice-based snacks; for kumquat products (the oval kumquat is a Yilan signature); and for traditional Yilan cuisine banquet dishes served in the county's restaurants. Jiaoxi's hot-spring economy has spawned its own products such as hot-spring tomatoes and hot-spring glutinous rice cakes.
The standout eating experience is the Luodong Night Market, wrapped around Zhongshan Park, where stalls serve oyster omelettes, fried rice noodles, filled tapioca balls and — for the brave — stinky tofu. Jiaoxi has its own famous street snacks: steamed buns and green-onion pancakes. Vegetarian food is easy to find across Taiwan — look for the "素" sign. Halal and certified gluten-free options are limited; plan ahead.
What is the culture like?
Yilan is steeped in temple culture — the county has around 63 temples, most of them Taoist — and religious festivals and deity parades are a defining part of local life, especially at weekends. Major celebrations cluster around lunar-calendar dates: the Cheng-Huang (City God) birthday parade from Yilan Cheng-Huang Temple, and the Dong-Yue birthday festival from Yilan Dong-Yu Temple. Parades feature traditional musical orchestras, deity sedan chairs, folk dancers and characters from Taiwanese myth such as Chi-ye and Ba-ye; visitors are welcome to watch and photograph respectfully, observing local taboos.
As the birthplace of Taiwanese opera (gezaixi), Yilan keeps this art alive — the Taiwan Theater Museum in Yilan City periodically stages live opera and puppet shows. The county's Japanese colonial heritage shows in its restored railway buildings, brick kilns, museums and official residences. Local crafts and a strong literary tradition round out a county that, despite easy access from Taipei, has kept a distinct cultural identity.
