Yujing

Tainan, Taiwan

About Yujing

Yujing (玉井, sometimes Yuching) is an inland hill district in the eastern part of Tainan special municipality, where the coastal plain of southwestern Taiwan gives way to low mountains. It is a quiet, rural place best known for one thing above all others: mangoes. Yujing is widely regarded as the mango capital of Taiwan, and its warm climate, hilly orchards and well-drained soils produce some of the country's most prized fruit, especially the fragrant aiwen (Irwin) mango that turns the district golden in early summer.

Yujing's appeal is gentle and seasonal. There are no grand monuments; instead the draw is the agricultural landscape — orchard-covered hillsides, fruit markets, small temples and the easygoing rhythm of a farming town. The district sits on the route toward the mountains of Tainan's interior, making it a natural stop for travellers heading inland. Its history runs deeper than the fruit suggests: the 1915 Tapani Incident, a major anti-Japanese uprising, took place in this area.

The climate is tropical, with hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters. The best time to visit depends on your purpose: for mangoes, come in early summer (roughly May to July), when the harvest is in full swing and the markets overflow; for comfortable weather, the dry season (November to April) is more pleasant. Summer is hot and humid with a typhoon risk. Yujing is a compact rural town surrounded by orchard hills.

How to reach

By Plane

Tainan Airport (TNN) is the nearest airport, with domestic flights to Kinmen and Penghu; it is a long taxi ride inland to Yujing. For wider connections, Kaohsiung International Airport is the main option, and Tainan is also reachable from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport by HSR.

By Train

By Car / Road

Yujing is reached by road, inland from central Tainan; driving takes roughly an hour. The route continues onward into the mountains toward areas such as Nanhua and the Tainan interior. Local buses connect Yujing with central Tainan and with the inland districts, but services are infrequent — a car is much more practical, especially for visiting orchards and outlying sights.

Yujing town itself is small and walkable — the market, the temple and the central streets are easily covered on foot. To reach the orchards, scenic hill roads and outlying attractions, a car or scooter is needed, as the district is rural and spread out with little local transport. Taxis can be arranged in town but are not abundant.

Things to do

  • Yujing Mango Market (玉井青果市場) — the lively heart of the district during harvest season, where mangoes are traded in bulk and sold fresh; busiest and most colourful in early summer.

  • Yujing Beiji Temple — a local temple typical of Taiwanese folk religion, a focal point of community life.

  • Tapani Incident memorial sites — places associated with the 1915 anti-Japanese uprising centred on this area, for those interested in Taiwan's colonial-era history.

  • Orchard-covered hillsides — the surrounding hills, draped in mango and other fruit trees, are a sight in themselves, especially as the fruit ripens.

  • Mango-themed visits — in season, tour orchards, watch the market trade and eat freshly harvested fruit straight from the source.

  • Eat mango shaved ice — Yujing is famous for shaved ice piled high with fresh mango; the dedicated dessert shops are a destination in their own right.

  • Scenic hill drives — the orchard roads through the surrounding hills make for relaxed, pretty drives.

  • Continue into the Tainan interior — Yujing is a logical base for trips further into the mountains toward Nanhua Reservoir and beyond.

Cafes & Nightlife

Fresh mango juice and other fruit drinks are a local highlight, alongside the usual tea and bubble-tea stalls. Yujing has little nightlife; it is a daytime destination.
