Al-Bab

Al-Bab is a city in the Ḩalab (Aleppo) Governorate of northern Syria, located about 40 km northeast of Aleppo near the Turkish border. The name means "The Gate" in Arabic, referring to its historical role as a gateway on the trade route between Aleppo and Anatolia. The city has been a centre of conflict during the Syrian civil war and was a stronghold of various factions before coming under the control of the Turkish-backed Syrian Interim Government. Its economy is based on agriculture and cross-border trade.

The climate is semi-arid: hot summers and cool, rainy winters. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant periods.

Aleppo International Airport (ALP) is about 50 km southwest. A taxi costs SYP 15,000–22,000 and takes about 45 minutes.

Al-Bab is on the road from Aleppo to Manbij, about 40 km (40 minutes) northeast of Aleppo. Shared microbuses from Aleppo serve Al-Bab (fare about SYP 3,000–5,000).

The city is moderately sized and walkable in the central area.

• Al-Bab Castle: A small historic fortress (qal'a) on the edge of the town, dating from the Ayyubid or Mamluk period.

• Old city centre: Traditional stone buildings and a small souq.

• Turkish border: The Bab al-Salama border crossing is about 10 km north, a major crossing point for goods and people.

• Castle visit: Explore the modest fortress ruins.

• Border market: The area near the Bab al-Salama crossing has a lively cross-border trade.

• Al-Bab Grill: Turkish-influenced kebabs and grilled meats. A meal costs SYP 4,000–8,000.
• Street food: Turkish-style lahmacun (thin meat-topped flatbread) and gözleme (filled pancakes) are popular.

Tea (Turkish-style) and Turkish coffee are the standard beverages. Bottled water is recommended.

• Budget: Basic hotels near the border crossing from SYP 12,000–20,000.
• Mid-range / Upscale: The nearest comfortable hotels are in Aleppo (40 km southwest).

The local market is dominated by Turkish consumer goods, textiles, and food products due to the border trade. Prices are generally low.
