Why visit?

The Canton of Luzern sits at the geographic and cultural heart of Switzerland, anchored by the city of Lucerne — one of the country's most visited destinations. The canton encompasses the northwestern shore of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), the rolling agricultural lowlands of the Seetal and Suhrental, and the foothills of the Swiss Alps. The landscape shifts from lakeside promenades and medieval old towns to rolling farmland dotted with market villages, all within easy reach of the Alpine peaks that define the Swiss imagination.

Lucerne itself is a city of around 80,000 people whose charm lies in its remarkable medieval architecture: the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) — the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe — the Spreuer Bridge with its macabre Dance of Death paintings, and the Museggmauer city wall with its walkable ramparts. Tourism here dates back to the 19th century, when Mark Twain counted "millions" of miniature Lion Monument souvenirs. Today the city is a gateway to Central Switzerland, with the world-class KKL concert hall, the Rosengart Collection of Picasso and Klee, and the Swiss Museum of Transport drawing visitors year-round.

Beyond the city, the canton unfolds into the gentle Seetal valley, the fruit-growing slopes of the Seetal and Wiggertal, and the alpine foothills around the Rigi and Pilatus mountains. Towns like Sursee, Willisau, and Beromünster preserve a quiet, distinctly Swiss character — red-fronted farmhouses, onion-domed churches, and weekly markets — that offers a counterpoint to the bustle of Lucerne's lakeside.

When is the best time to visit?

Lucerne and its canton are pleasant year-round, but the best months are May through September, when temperatures are warm (20-25°C), the lakeside is alive with activity, and the mountain panoramas are clearest. July and August are peak season — the city fills with tourists and the lake steamers run at full capacity — but the surrounding countryside remains peaceful.

Winter (December to February) brings crisp, cold days with temperatures often below freezing. Snowfall is common in the lowlands and heavier in the mountains, making it a good time for excursions to Rigi and Pilatus, which have winter hiking and limited skiing. The city's Christmas markets (late November to late December) and the Fasnacht carnival (February) are atmospheric reasons to visit in the colder months.

Key events include the Lucerne Festival (August-September, plus a spring "Piano" festival and a summer "Strings" edition), one of the world's premier classical music festivals held at the KKL. Fasnacht (Lucerne's carnival, in February) features elaborate costumes, masked processions, and a famously irreverent spirit. The Lucerne Blues Festival (November) draws international acts to intimate venues across the city.

How do you get around?

Lucerne's central position makes it one of Switzerland's best-connected cities by rail. The main station (Bahnhof Luzern) has half-hourly trains to Zurich (45 minutes), hourly trains to Bern (1 hour), and connections to Basel, Bellinzona (Ticino), St. Gallen, and Interlaken via the Zentralbahn. The train station is directly on the lakeshore, steps from the old town.

Within the canton, the SBB and its subsidiaries operate rail lines through the Seetal valley (to Lenzburg and beyond) and south along the lakeshore to Alpnachstad (for Mount Pilatus access). The private Arth-Rigi-Bahn and Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn railways climb Mount Rigi from Arth-Goldau and Vitznau respectively — both are classic Swiss mountain railway experiences.

Lake Lucerne's Schifffahrtsgesellschaft operates scheduled boat services connecting Lucerne with Weggis, Vitznau, Flüelen, and Brunnen, with some routes using historic paddle-steamers. The Lucerne bus network (VBL) covers the city and suburbs efficiently. Overnight visitors receive a Lucerne Visitor Card providing free public transport within Zone 10 (which includes the Transport Museum and the Pilatus cable car base). Bicycles can be rented at the main railway station for around Fr. 31 per day.

Where should you go?

  • Lucerne — the cantonal capital and Switzerland's most-visited medieval city, with its iconic Chapel Bridge, Lion Monument, and lakeside promenade
  • Emmen — a large, modern suburb of Lucerne and the canton's most populous municipality after the capital, with shopping and the Emmen Centre complex
  • Kriens — a gateway to Mount Pilatus, with the valley station of the Pilatus cable car and access to alpine hiking
  • Horw — a lakeside community on the south shore of Lake Lucerne, with views across to the city and easy access to the KKL by boat
  • Sursee — a charming medieval town on the shores of Lake Sempach, with a beautifully preserved old town and a Gothic parish church
  • Willisau — a market town in the Wiggertal with a picturesque old quarter, annual folk festival, and a long tradition of cattle trading
  • Weggis — a lakeside village on the Rigi with a mild microclimate, lakeside promenades, and the base station of the Vitznau-Rigi cogwheel railway
  • Vitznau — a quiet village on the shore of Lake Lucerne, the starting point of the historic Vitznau-Rigi cogwheel railway, the first mountain railway in Europe
  • Hochdorf — the main town of the Hochdorf district, with a museum dedicated to the Celtic Hochdorf burial site, one of Europe's most important Iron Age finds
  • Ebikon — a residential town northeast of Lucerne, with good transport links and access to the Rotsee rowing lake, a world-class 2,000 m course
  • Beromünster — a historic village known for its Romanesque collegiate church, its medieval town centre, and as the site of Switzerland's first radio transmitter (1931)
  • Sempach — a lakeside town with a dramatic history — the 1386 Battle of Sempach, which shaped Swiss Confederation politics, is commemorated at the battlefield memorial
  • Schüpfheim — the gateway to the Entlebuch valley (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), with access to the wild, moorland landscapes of the Napf region

What should you eat?

Luzern's culinary traditions are rooted in the farming heartland of Central Switzerland. The most iconic dish is Luzerner Chügelipastete — a vol-au-vent filled with veal, mushrooms, and cream sauce, traditionally served at formal occasions and found on menus throughout the canton. Rösti — shredded potatoes fried until golden — appears everywhere, often topped with cheese, bacon, and a fried egg.

The canton's agricultural lowlands produce excellent dairy products. Luzerner Rahmkuchen is a cream-filled pastry that pairs perfectly with afternoon coffee. Local cheeses include variants from the Emmental tradition, and the fruit-growing regions of the Seetal and Wiggertal produce apples and pears that appear in ciders, juices, and desserts. Birnbrot — a dried-pear bread roll — is a traditional Central Swiss snack.

The lakeside restaurants in Lucerne, Weggis, and Vitznau serve fresh fish from Lake Lucerne, including Felchen (whitefish), often pan-fried simply with butter and lemon. The city of Lucerne itself has a wide range of dining options, from traditional Swiss taverns to Michelin-starred restaurants, with the old town's Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt squares offering particularly atmospheric settings.

What is the culture like?

The Lucerne Festival (August-September) is the canton's crown jewel — a classical music festival of international stature, held in the Jean Nouvel-designed KKL concert hall (La salle blanche), renowned for its acoustics. The festival draws world-class orchestras and soloists, with a spring piano edition and a summer strings edition complementing the main autumn programme.

Fasnacht (February) is Lucerne's riotous carnival, one of the largest in Switzerland. The celebrations begin on "Schmutziger Donnerstag" (Dirty Thursday) with masked processions, satirical floats, and the distinctive Guggenmusik — brass bands that play deliberately out of tune. The carnival continues through the weekend with events across the city.

Lucerne Blues Festival (November) brings international blues, jazz, and roots musicians to intimate venues around the city. Willisauer Volksfest (late August) is one of Central Switzerland's largest folk festivals, combining a traditional market, agricultural show, and fairground.

The canton has a strong choral tradition — Switzerland's singing and yodelling culture is well represented here — and the Richard Wagner Museum on the shores of Lake Lucerne in Tribschen commemorates the composer's residence in the city from 1866 to 1872, where he composed the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday gift for his wife.

What are the standout experiences?

  1. Walk the Chapel Bridge and Museggmauer — cross the 14th-century Chapel Bridge, the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, admiring its 17th-century paintings of Swiss history, then climb the medieval city wall for panoramic views over the lake and rooftops.

  2. Ride the Vitznau-Rigi cogwheel railway — the first mountain railway in Europe (1871) climbs from the lakeside village of Vitznau to the summit of Mount Rigi (1,798 m), the "Queen of the Mountains," offering 360-degree views of the Alps, Lake Lucerne, and the Mittelland.

  3. Experience the Lucerne Festival at the KKL — attend a concert in the world-famous "Salle blanche," whose acoustics are considered among the finest in Europe. The KKL building itself, designed by Jean Nouvel with a dramatic cantilevered roof over the lake, is an architectural landmark.

  4. Explore the Entlebuch UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — Switzerland's first biosphere reserve encompasses wild moorland, karst formations, and dense forests in the Napf region, offering hiking through landscapes that feel far removed from the well-trodden tourist trails.

  5. Cross Lake Lucerne by paddle-steamer — take the historic fleet of Schifffahrtsgesellschaft paddle-steamers from Lucerne across the lake to Flüelen, a 3-hour journey past the William Tell chapel, the Rütli meadow (birthplace of the Swiss Confederation), and the dramatic Axenstrasse cliff road.
