Horw
Luzern, Switzerland
Why visit Horw?
Horw is a lakeside municipality in the canton of Lucerne, occupying the Horwer Halbinsel (Horw peninsula) on the southwestern arm of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee). Situated at the eastern base of Mount Pilatus, Horw borders the city of Lucerne directly to the north and opens south toward the alpine peaks of Central Switzerland. The municipality has around 15,000 residents and includes the central village district, the technology and architecture campus of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), and lakeside hamlets such as Kastanienbaum and St. Niklausen.
Travelers use Horw as a quiet, scenic base for exploring the Lake Lucerne region while staying outside the busy urban center of Lucerne. Its extensive shoreline provides public bathing lidos, waterfront walking trails, and passenger ferry landings. The town also serves as a starting point for excursions to Mount Pilatus, road and cycling loops around the peninsula, and day trips into the pre-Alps of Nidwalden and Obwalden.
The local climate is temperate Central European with alpine and lacustrine influences. Summers are warm and moderately humid, with daytime high temperatures averaging between 22°C and 26°C (72°F–79°F). Winters are cold, with daytime highs averaging 2°C to 5°C (36°F–41°F) and occasional snow. The lake moderates local temperatures on the peninsula, reducing winter frost severity and cooling warm summer afternoons.
