About Knivsta
Knivsta is a small municipality and town in Uppsala County, located on the plains of Uppland roughly 15 km south of Uppsala and about 50 km north of Stockholm. The area has deep historical roots — the Stones of Mora (Mora stenar), a medieval site where Swedish kings were elected, lie within the municipality, and the district's past stretches back to the Viking era. Knivsta became an independent municipality in 2003 when it was separated from Uppsala Municipality, and in the two decades since it has grown rapidly into a popular commuter town for people working in both Uppsala and Stockholm.
The town itself is a modern settlement of detached houses and low-rise apartment blocks, surrounded by agricultural land, small lakes, and patches of mixed forest. With one of the youngest population profiles of any Swedish municipality, Knivsta has a distinctly family-oriented character. It lacks the historic cobblestoned centre of nearby Uppsala but compensates with green spaces, easy access to the surrounding countryside, and a quieter pace of life.
The municipality includes several villages and localities: Knivsta proper is the administrative centre; Alsike, just to the south, functions almost as a suburb of Uppsala and has seen significant new residential development; and scattered smaller communities dot the landscape between. The E4 motorway and the main Stockholm–Uppsala railway line both pass through the municipality, making it a convenient stopover or base for exploring the wider Uppsala region.
Central Sweden has a humid continental climate. Winters (November–March) are cold, with average temperatures around −3 to −5 °C and frequent snow; daylight shrinks to roughly six hours at the December solstice. Summers are mild and bright, with June–August highs of 18–23 °C and near-endless daylight around midsummer. Spring and autumn bring unpredictable weather — rain, wind, and occasional sun in quick succession.

By Plane
Stockholm Arlanda Airport (IATA: ARN) lies about 25 km south of Knivsta in neighbouring Sigtuna Municipality, making it the closest airport. Arlanda is Sweden's main international hub with flights from across Europe and beyond. From the airport, the drive to Knivsta takes roughly 20–25 minutes via the E4. Taxis cost approximately 350–500 SEK depending on the company. Airport coaches (Flygbussarna and UL buses) connect Arlanda to Uppsala, but there is no direct bus to Knivsta — you can take a train from Arlanda Central station (Arlanda C) on the Uppsala-bound line, which stops at Knivsta in about 10–12 minutes. A one-way train ticket costs around 80–120 SEK.
By Train
Knivsta has a small railway station (Knivsta station) on the main Stockholm–Uppsala line, served by SJ regional trains and Mälartåg (regional services operated by Mälardalstrafik). Trains run frequently — roughly every 30 minutes during peak hours — and the journey to Uppsala takes about 10 minutes, while Stockholm Central is around 35–40 minutes. Tickets can be bought via the SJ app or at ticket machines; advance booking is not necessary for regional trains but can save money on longer SJ services. The station is a short walk from the town centre.
By Car / Road
Knivsta sits directly on the E4 motorway (now designated E4/E20 in some sections), which runs the length of Sweden's eastern coast. Driving from Uppsala takes about 15 minutes (15 km) heading south; from Stockholm city centre, it is roughly 50–60 minutes (50 km) heading north depending on traffic. The road is a well-maintained motorway throughout. Uppsala Länstrafik (UL) operates regional bus services connecting Knivsta to Uppsala and surrounding towns, though frequencies are lower on weekends and evenings. Bus 810 runs between Knivsta and Uppsala regularly on weekdays.
Knivsta is a small town and most of the centre is easily walkable. Cycling is popular and practical — the municipality has a network of local cycling paths and the flat terrain makes it effortless. A few local bus routes connect Knivsta town centre to surrounding villages like Alsike and Lagga, operated by UL (Uppsalas Lokaltrafik), with a single-zone fare of around 35–40 SEK. Taxis can be ordered through Uppsala Taxi (018-100 000) or Taxi Kurir (018-500 000) but are rarely needed within the town itself. There is no metro or tram. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber operate in the wider Uppsala–Stockholm corridor but are not always available locally. Walking from the train station to the town centre takes about 10 minutes.

Historic and Cultural Sites
Stones of Mora (Mora stenar) — A medieval assembly site 5 km east of Knivsta where Swedish kings were acclaimed from the 13th century until the practice ended in the 1500s. Several large memorial stones stand in a small open area with interpretive panels. The site is free to visit year-round and open at all times; it is a short drive or cycle from the centre. One of Uppland's most important historical landmarks.
Broborg — A prehistoric hillfort (fästning) near Alsike, dating from the Migration Period (roughly 400–550 AD). The earthen ramparts are well-preserved and the site offers views over the surrounding agricultural landscape. Accessible on foot; free entry.
Alsike Monastery (Alsike kloster) — The ruins of a medieval monastery near the village of Alsike. The site dates to the 13th century and is now a peaceful green space with visible foundation walls. Free to visit.
Knivsta Church (Knivsta kyrka) — A medieval stone church in the village of Knivsta, typical of Uppland parish churches with whitewashed walls and a red-tiled roof. The interior has some historical furnishings.
Nature
Säbysjön — A lake just north-east of Knivsta known for its birdlife and natural beauty. A popular spot for walking, fishing (fishing permit required), and nature observation. Accessible from several points around its shore.
Cycling the Uppland countryside — The flat terrain around Knivsta is ideal for cycling day trips through farmland and small villages. Routes connect Knivsta to Alsike, Lagga, and onward toward Uppsala or the Sigtuna area.
Birdwatching at Säbysjön — The lake and its surrounding wetlands attract a variety of waterbirds and raptors, especially during spring and autumn migration. Bring binoculars and a field guide.
Day trips to Uppsala — Just 10 minutes by train, Uppsala offers Uppsala Cathedral, the Gustavianum museum, Uppsala Castle, and the university's botanical gardens — an easy half-day excursion from Knivsta.
Fishing — Several small lakes and streams in and around Knivsta offer coarse fishing. Permits (fiskekort) are available from the local municipality or through iFiske.se, typically 50–100 SEK per day.
Walking and jogging — A network of local trails runs through fields and light woodland. The municipality maintains marked paths around Säbysjön and near Broborg.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Knivsta's dining scene is modest, centred on a handful of local restaurants and pizzerias rather than a broad culinary range. Swedish home-cooking staples — köttbullar (meatballs), sill (herring), and husmanskost (traditional comfort food) — feature prominently. Expect most meals to cost 100–200 SEK for a main course.
Krusenberg Herrgård (Krusenberg 436, +46 18-18 03 00) — The restaurant at Krusenberg Manor serves seasonal Swedish and Nordic-influenced cuisine in a grand historic setting. A mid-to-upscale option for a special dinner; mains from around 250–400 SEK. Reservations recommended.
Knivsta Centrum restaurants — A few casual eateries and pizzerias in the town centre offer affordable meals (90–150 SEK for a main). These change over time; ask locally for current recommendations.
Packing a picnic — Given the short distances to lakes and countryside, picking up supplies at Coop or ICA and eating outdoors at Säbysjön or near Mora stenar is a perfectly Knivsta way to enjoy a meal.
Vegetarian options are available at most Swedish restaurants as standard; halal and gluten-free options are more limited in Knivsta itself but readily available in nearby Uppsala.
Cafes & Nightlife
Train Station Brewery and Tap Room (Stationshuset Medlemspub), Stationsvägen 2 — A membership pub housed in the old Knivsta railway station building. It serves its own craft beers from Train Station Brewery alongside a rotating selection of Swedish microbrews. Membership is required but can be purchased on the spot or via their website for a small annual fee. A unique Knivsta experience and one of the town's few dedicated drinking spots.
Cafés — A couple of small cafés operate in the town centre, serving the usual Swedish coffee-and-pastry fare (fika). Sweden takes its coffee seriously — expect strong filter coffee (bryggkaffe) and freshly baked kanelbullar (cinnamon buns). Water from the tap is safe to drink throughout Sweden; there is no need to buy bottled water.
Alcohol above 3.5% ABV is sold only at Systembolaget (the state alcohol monopoly); the nearest Systembolaget stores are in Knivsta and Uppsala. Beer at 3.5% and below is available in supermarkets.
