About Santigron

Santigron is a traditional Maroon village in the Wanica District of Suriname, set on the bank of the Saramacca River roughly 30 km southwest of the capital, Paramaribo. It is the closest traditional Maroon village to Paramaribo, which makes it the most accessible place to experience Maroon culture for visitors short on time. The village was founded in the mid-19th century by Jajasie Adoemakeë and is home to a mixed population — drawing on the Saramaka (Saramaccan), Ndyuka (Aucan) and Matawai Maroon groups, descendants of Africans who escaped enslavement on the colonial plantations and built free communities in the interior. The village has roughly 1,750 inhabitants.

For travellers, Santigron is above all a cultural destination. Tours, usually arranged from Paramaribo, introduce visitors to Maroon traditional dress, woodcarving, drumming and dance — most famously the Awasa dance and the Songe ("dance of the fish") — and typically include a Surinamese lunch, a look at the village school and church, and time to relax in a hammock or take a dip in the river. Reaching the village often involves a short boat crossing of the Saramacca River, which is part of the experience.

The climate is hot and humid year-round, with daytime temperatures around 30-33°C. The driest, most comfortable months are roughly August to November (plus a short dry spell in February-March); the long rains from late April to August and the short rains in December-January can make river travel and the unpaved approach muddy.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest international airport is Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM) at Zanderij in the Para District, around 50 km away; Zorg en Hoop Airport (ORG) in Paramaribo serves domestic flights. From either, Santigron is reached by road and a short river crossing — almost always as part of an organised tour rather than independently.

By Train

By Car / Road

Santigron is about 30 km southwest of Paramaribo. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour on a mix of sealed and unpaved roads via the Wanica interior, ending at a landing on the Saramacca River where a boat ferries visitors across to the village. Because the final stretch and the river crossing are easiest to arrange through operators, most visitors come on a guided day trip from Paramaribo; independent drivers should ask locally about current road conditions and boat transfers. Suriname drives on the left.

The village itself is small and explored entirely on foot, usually guided by a resident who explains the layout, the church, the school and daily life. There is no public transport within Santigron. Getting to and from the village relies on the road-and-boat link from the Saramacca River landing, normally handled by your tour operator. The river crossing by motorised canoe is the standard means of access.

Things to do

  • The village and its riverside setting — a living Maroon community on the Saramacca River, with traditional houses, the village church and school shown on most tours.

  • Maroon woodcarving — Santigron is known for its carved wooden objects; craftwork gets special attention on village tours and pieces are made and sold locally.

  • Saramacca River frontage — the broad river that defines and supplies the village, crossed by canoe and used for swimming.

  • Cultural village tour — the headline activity: traditional dress, crafts, drumming and a guided walk through community life.

  • Maroon dance performances — villagers perform the Awasa and the Songe ("dance of the fish") for visiting groups.

  • Woodcarving demonstrations — watch and learn about the carving traditions the village is known for.

  • River swimming and hammock time — many tours include a dip in the Saramacca River and time to relax in a hammock.

  • Surinamese lunch — tours typically include a local meal prepared in the village.

Food & Dining

Food in Santigron is generally provided as part of a tour: a Surinamese lunch prepared by villagers, often featuring rice, cassava, river fish, chicken and local vegetables. There are no restaurants in the village, so independent visitors should arrange meals through their operator or bring their own. For a full range of dining — warungs, roti shops and Surinamese restaurants — Lelydorp and Paramaribo are the nearest options.

Cafes & Nightlife

Tours usually provide drinks with the included lunch. There are no bars in the village; soft drinks and water are the norm, sometimes with the national lager, Parbo, available through operators. River water is not for drinking — bring or buy bottled water for the trip, as the village is rural and away from treated municipal supplies.
