Gampaha

Western Province, Sri Lanka

Why visit Gampaha?

Gampaha is the main city of the Gampaha District in Western Province, located about 30 km northeast of Colombo. The name "Gampaha" means "five villages" in Sinhala, referring to the five original settlements that grew together. It serves as an important commercial and administrative centre for the region, sitting at the crossroads of the Colombo–Kandy road and the Negombo road.

Gampaha is known as a centre for rubber and coconut cultivation, and the surrounding area is lush with plantations. The city has a relaxed, provincial character compared to Colombo, with a pleasant climate moderated by its inland position. It is also home to the University of Sri Jayewardenepura's Faculty of Medicine and several notable Buddhist temples. The tropical monsoon climate brings temperatures around 25–32°C, best visited December–March.
