Mawanella

Mawanella (Sinhala: මාවනැල්ල, Tamil: மாவனெல்ல) is a town in the Kegalle District of Sabaragamuwa Province, located about 15 km east of Kegalle on the A1 highway. It is known for its spice gardens and as a centre for the cultivation of cinnamon, pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. The town is a convenient stop on the Colombo–Kandy road.

Mawanella has a busy market and several spice garden showrooms where visitors can take a free guided tour. The surrounding hills are covered with tea and rubber plantations. Climate is tropical, best visited December–March.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB IATA) is 95 km west.

By Train

Mawanella Railway Station is on the main Colombo–Kandy line. Express trains from Colombo Fort take about 2.5 hours (Rs 250–600).

By Car / Road

Mawanella is 15 km east of Kegalle and 20 km west of Kandy on the A1 highway. Buses from Colombo take 2.5 hours.
