Why visit Thunukkai?

Thunukkai (Tamil: துணுக்காய்) is a town in the Mullaitivu District of Northern Province, located in the interior region of the Wanni. It was one of the areas heavily affected by the Sri Lankan Civil War, serving as a former LTTE stronghold. Since the war ended in 2009, the town has been undergoing reconstruction and resettlement.

Thunukkai is a predominantly Tamil agricultural area, with paddy cultivation, coconut plantations, and vegetable farming. The town has basic infrastructure and services. It is not a tourist destination but offers insight into the post-war recovery efforts in northern Sri Lanka. Climate is hot and dry, best visited December–March.
