Why visit Chunnakam?
Chunnakam (Tamil: சுன்னாகம்) is a town in the Jaffna District of Northern Province, located about 10 km north of Jaffna city. It is a major agricultural centre in the Jaffna Peninsula, known for its red soil (terra rossa) that is ideal for growing onions, potatoes, and chillies. Chunnakam is often called the "vegetable bowl of Jaffna."
The town is predominantly Tamil and has several historic Hindu temples and churches. Chunnakam was heavily affected by the civil war but has experienced rapid reconstruction. The town has a lively market and is known for its religious diversity. Climate is dry and hot, best visited December–March.

By Train
Chunnakam Railway Station is on the Colombo–Jaffna line, about 10 minutes from Jaffna station.
By Car / Road
Chunnakam is 10 km north of Jaffna on the A9 highway. Buses from Jaffna take 15–20 minutes.
