Velanai

Velanai (Tamil: வேலணை) is an island town in the Jaffna District of Northern Province, located about 15 km west of Jaffna city. It is one of the islands in the Jaffna archipelago, connected to the mainland by a causeway. Velanai is a quiet fishing and agricultural island with a relaxed rural atmosphere.

The island is known for its Hindu temples, palmyrah trees, and traditional fishing villages. The surrounding waters are rich in marine life. Velanai has excellent beaches that are largely undeveloped. Climate is hot and dry, best visited December–March.
