Why visit Mihintale?

Mihintale (Sinhala: මිහින්තලේ, Tamil: மிகிந்தலை) is a historic mountain peak located 12 km east of Anuradhapura in the North Central Province. It is considered the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. According to tradition, in 247 BCE, Mahinda Thera, son of Emperor Ashoka of India, met King Devanampiya Tissa on this mountain and preached the first Buddhist sermon on the island.

Mihintale is a major pilgrimage site today, with a large monastic complex spread across the mountainside. The site features grand staircases, ancient stupas, monasteries, and rock inscriptions. The climb to the summit involves 1,840 granite steps, offering panoramic views of the surrounding plains. The annual Poson Poya festival (June) brings thousands of pilgrims. Climate is hot and dry, best visited December–April.
