Why visit Trincomalee?
Trincomalee (Tamil: திருகோணமலை, Sinhala: ත්රිකුණාමලය, commonly called Trinco) is a major port city on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast and the capital of the Eastern Province. It is home to one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world, which has been fought over by Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British colonial powers. The city has a rich history spanning over 2,500 years as a trading port.
Trincomalee is famous for its stunning beaches — Nilaveli, Uppuveli, and Marble Bay — and the Koneswaram Temple, a historic Hindu temple perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Whale watching and dolphin watching are excellent here, with blue whales visible from November to April. The city has a mix of Tamil, Sinhalese, and Muslim populations. Climate is hot and dry, best visited December–April.
