Why visit Arugam Bay?
Arugam Bay (Tamil: அறுகம் குடா, locally known as "Arugam Kudah") is a coastal town in the Ampara District of Eastern Province, located about 90 km south of Batticaloa. It is one of the world's top surfing destinations, with the famous "Arugam Bay Point" offering a perfect right-hand point break that attracts surfers from around the globe from April to October.
The town has a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere with a mix of Muslim, Tamil, and expat communities. The main surf break at the southern end of the bay is world-class, and there are several other breaks nearby including Whisky Point and Pottuvil Point. Arugam Bay was devastated by the 2004 tsunami but has been rebuilt as a thriving surf tourism hub. The best surf season is April–October, while the best weather is April–September.
