Sigiriya
Central Province, Sri Lanka
Why visit Sigiriya?
Sigiriya (Sinhala: සීගිරිය, Tamil: சிகிரியா), also known as Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Rising 200 m above the surrounding jungle, this ancient rock fortress was the capital of King Kashyapa (477–495 CE). The site combines a natural rock formation with sophisticated urban planning — water gardens, mirror walls, frescoes of celestial maidens, and a massive lion-shaped gateway that gives the site its name.
Sigiriya is often described as the eighth wonder of the ancient world. The summit once held a royal palace, now in ruins, offering spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding plains. The surrounding village has grown into a tourist hub serving visitors to the rock. The climate is dry and hot, best visited early morning (6:30AM opening) to avoid heat and crowds. The best season is December–April.
