About Heuksando

Heuksando is a small, rugged island in the Dadohaehaesang National Park, lying far off the southwestern coast of Jeollanam-do and administered as part of Sinan County. Its name means "Black Mountain Island", said to derive from the dark, densely forested hills that rise steeply from the sea. Despite its remoteness, Heuksando has long been an important waypoint for ships crossing the Yellow Sea, and today it is one of the most popular of the Sinan archipelago's hundreds of islands for travellers seeking dramatic seascapes and a working fishing community.

The island's character is shaped by the sea. Steep cliffs, sea stacks, hidden coves and a deeply indented coastline make for striking scenery, while the harbour at Yeri buzzes with fishing boats and the trade in dried fish for which the island is known. Heuksando has a quiet historical pedigree too: the Joseon-era scholar Jeong Yak-jeon was exiled here and wrote an early treatise on the local marine life, and the island carries memories of both pilgrims and traders who passed through over the centuries. A scenic ring road and coastal viewpoints make it easy to appreciate the island's beauty even on a short visit.

The climate is mild maritime — summers are warm and humid with monsoon rain, and winters are cool and windy but rarely harsh. Spring and autumn, with clear skies and calm seas, are the most comfortable times to visit. Sea conditions matter as much as the season: ferries are weather-dependent, and crossings can be cancelled in high winds or fog, so build flexibility into any itinerary.

How to reach

By Plane

By Train

By Car / Road

The road journey applies only to the mainland leg as far as Mokpo, which is the gateway port. Mokpo is well connected by expressway and national roads — roughly 40 minutes from the Wolchulsan area, around 1.5 hours from Gwangju — and by frequent intercity buses and KTX trains. From Mokpo's coastal ferry terminal, fast passenger ferries cross to Heuksando's Yeri Port in roughly 2 hours, with some services continuing to Hongdo. Most visitors leave their car in Mokpo, as the island is small.

Heuksando has a scenic ring road connecting Yeri Port with the island's villages and viewpoints. A local island bus and sightseeing services run loops of the ring road, timed loosely around ferry arrivals, with modest cash fares. Taxis operate from Yeri Port and can be hired for island tours; arranging one through your accommodation is easiest. Villages near the harbour are walkable, and walking trails climb to coastal lookouts. There are no metro or ride-hailing apps; the island is safe, with no notable scams.

Things to do

  • Yeri Port and harbour — The lively heart of the island, where fishing boats unload and dried fish hangs in racks; the natural starting point for any visit.

  • Coastal ring road viewpoints — A series of cliff-top lookouts around the island's loop road frame sea stacks, coves and the open Yellow Sea.

  • Sangra-san and forested ridges — The dark wooded hills that give the island its name offer hiking and panoramic summit views.

  • Jeong Yak-jeon heritage sites — Markers and a memorial relating to the exiled scholar who studied Heuksando's marine life recall the island's literary history.

  • Sea stacks and rock formations — Distinctively shaped offshore rocks are visible from the ring road and from sightseeing boats.

  • Ring road sightseeing — Circle the island by bus, taxi tour or on foot to take in its coastal scenery.

  • Hiking — Trails climb the forested ridges to summit viewpoints overlooking the archipelago.

  • Boat trips to Hongdo — Many visitors pair Heuksando with nearby Hongdo, the "Red Island", famous for its crimson cliffs and sea-cave tours; ferries connect the two.

  • Fishing village experiences — Watching the day's catch come in and exploring the harbour are simple pleasures of an island stay.

Food & Dining

Heuksando's cuisine is built around the sea, with meals served alongside the generous banchan typical of Jeollanam-do. Dining is concentrated around Yeri Port.

  • Harbour seafood eateries (Yeri Port) — Simple restaurants serving grilled fish, seafood stews and seaweed soup at budget prices, roughly ₩8,000–₩15,000 per person.
  • Hoetjip (raw-fish restaurants) — Fresh hoe (Korean-style sliced raw fish) and seafood platters drawn from the day's catch; mid-range, around ₩30,000–₩60,000 depending on the fish.
  • Dried-fish dishes — Local restaurants prepare the island's signature dried fish steamed or grilled — a Heuksando speciality worth seeking out.

Vegetarians will find rice and vegetable banchan, but dedicated vegetarian, halal and gluten-free options are very limited on a remote island — communicate dietary needs clearly.

Cafes & Nightlife

Soju and makgeolli accompany seafood meals, and small shops near the port sell beer and soft drinks. A few cafés in Yeri serve coffee. Korean tap water is officially considered safe, but bottled water is widely used and recommended on a small island; carry water on hikes.

Places to Stay

  • Budget: Minbak (homestays) and simple guesthouses around Yeri Port offer basic rooms, typically around ₩30,000–₩50,000 per night, often run by fishing families.

  • Mid-range: Pensions and small motels near the harbour with private rooms and sea views run roughly ₩60,000–₩100,000 per night, more in peak summer season.

  • Upscale / heritage: Heuksando has little upscale accommodation; travellers seeking higher-end lodging generally stay in Mokpo and visit the island on a longer day trip or overnight excursion.

What to buy

Heuksando is a fishing island, so the things to buy are edible: dried fish (the island is especially associated with dried croaker and other catch), seaweed and other marine products are sold at Yeri Port and in village shops. Prices are generally fixed and bargaining is not customary, though buying directly from producers can be cheaper. Stock up on any non-food essentials in Mokpo before crossing, as island shops are small.
