Shabeellaha Hoose (Lower Shabelle) is a region in southern Somalia along the lower course of the Shabelle River before it reaches the Indian Ocean. The region is one of Somalia's most densely populated and agriculturally productive areas, with the river supporting extensive farming of bananas, sugarcane, maize, and vegetables. The coastline on the Indian Ocean includes the historic port cities of Marka and Baraawe.
The region has been heavily affected by conflict and environmental challenges, including periodic flooding. The capital, Marka, is one of Somalia's oldest cities with a rich maritime history. The nearby town of Afgooye lies at the strategic crossroads of the Shabelle River and the road to Mogadishu.
When to Visit
The dry season from December to March is best for travel. The Gu rains (April to June) bring the highest river levels and can cause flooding.
