Afmadow

Jubbada Hoose, Somalia

About Afmadow

Afmadow is a commercial town in western Jubbada Hoose region, situated near the Kenyan border approximately 80 km west of Kismayo. The town serves as a key transit point for cross-border trade between Somalia and Kenya, and its livestock market is one of the most important in southern Somalia. The name Afmadow derives from Somali words meaning "black water," referring to a nearby spring.

Afmadow has a frontier-town atmosphere, with a mix of Somali, Bajuni, and Kenyan traders passing through. The town is relatively small and dusty, centered around its market square and the main road running toward the Kenyan border. The surrounding terrain is semi-arid bushland with scattered acacia trees and seasonal watercourses.

The climate is hot and dry for most of the year, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. The rainy seasons (April–June, October–November) bring brief but intense storms. Afmadow is slightly hotter and drier than coastal Kismayo due to its inland position. The town layout is compact, with the market area and mosque forming the core and residential areas radiating outward.
