Belet Xaawo

Gedo, Somalia

Why visit Belet Xaawo?

Belet Xaawo (also spelled Beled Hawo or Beledxaawo) is a town in the Gedo region of southwestern Somalia, notable as the only town in Somalia sitting at a tri-border point with both Kenya and Ethiopia. That position has made it the region's commercial hub: livestock trade, cross-border commerce, and remittances drive an economy locals describe as unusually cash-flush for Somalia, and the Kenyan shilling circulates alongside the Somali shilling due to the proximity of Mandera in northeastern Kenya. Like much of Gedo, the area hosted United Nations and US camps during the Operation Restore Hope intervention of the early 1990s.
