Small Malaita
Malaita, Solomon Islands
Why visit Small Malaita?
Small Malaita (also known as Maramasike or South Malaita Island) is a narrow island connected to the southern end of Malaita Island by a causeway. It forms part of Malaita Province, Solomon Islands. The island is about 30 km long and 3–5 km wide, separated from the main Malaita landmass by the narrow Maramasike Passage (also known as the Malaita Lagoon). The population is predominantly Melanesian and speaks the 'Are'are and Sa'a languages. Communities along the passage maintain a strong maritime culture with outrigger canoes forming the main transport. The landscape is hilly, covered in tropical forest with coconut plantations along the coast.
