Ontong Java Atoll

Malaita, Solomon Islands

Why visit Ontong Java Atoll?

Ontong Java Atoll (also known as Lord Howe Atoll) is a large atoll in Malaita Province, Solomon Islands, located about 250 km northwest of Malaita Island. It is one of the largest atolls in the world by area, with a lagoon covering approximately 1,500 km². The atoll consists of numerous low-lying islets (motu) surrounding a vast central lagoon. The population is of Polynesian origin and speaks the Luangiua language, closely related to languages of the Polynesian outliers. The atoll is extremely remote and traditional in character, with a subsistence economy based on fishing, coconut cultivation, and the production of copra. The climate is tropical and hot, with the atoll lying close to sea level throughout.
