Sikaiana
Malaita, Solomon Islands
Why visit Sikaiana?
Sikaiana (formerly known as the Stewart Islands) is a remote atoll in Malaita Province, Solomon Islands, located about 200 km northeast of Malaita Island. The atoll consists of a central lagoon surrounded by four small islets: Faore, Matuavi, Tehaolei, and Sikaiana itself. The population is Polynesian, speaking the Sikaiana language closely related to Tuvaluan, and the atoll has strong cultural and linguistic ties to Polynesia rather than to Melanesian Malaita. The atoll was traditionally ruled by chiefs and has a distinct polynesian social structure. The climate is tropical with a warm, wet season from November to March.
