Wagina

Choiseul, Solomon Islands

Why visit Wagina?

Wagina Island (also known as Vaghena Island) is a small island in Choiseul Province, Solomon Islands, located off the southeast coast of Choiseul Island. The island covers 110 km² and is home to about 1,600 people across three villages: Kukutin, Arariki, and Nikumaroro. Uniquely, the inhabitants are ethnic I-Kiribati (Micronesians) who were resettled here from the Phoenix Islands in the 1950s after earlier relocations from the Gilbert Islands. The island is low-lying, reaching only 42 m elevation, and is covered with coconut plantations and tropical vegetation. The climate is tropical and humid year-round.
