Šmarješke Toplice

Smarjeske Toplice is a small municipality in the Dolenjska (Lower Carniola) region of southeastern Slovenia, best known for its thermal spa resort. The municipality is centred on the settlement of Smarjeske Toplice, which has been a spa destination since the 19th century. The area sits in a hilly landscape of the Dolenjska rolling hills, at elevations of roughly 200–400 metres.

The thermal springs of Smarjeske Toplice have been used for medicinal bathing and relaxation, and the resort complex (Terme Krka) is the municipality's main draw. The surrounding landscape is characterised by mixed forests, vineyards, and traditional farmsteads typical of the Dolenjska region.

Smarjeske Toplice is not a large or bustling resort — it offers a quiet, restorative spa experience in a rural setting. The climate is sub-Mediterranean to continental, with warm summers and mild winters. The best time to visit depends on your interest: spa holidays are year-round, while outdoor activities are best in spring and summer.

Smarjeske Toplice is accessible by car from Novo Mesto (about 30 km) and Ljubljana (about 90 km). Local bus services connect to Novo Mesto but run infrequently. A car is the most practical way to reach the resort and explore the area.
